| This fifteen page document contains detailed information regarding engine problems with the B-17E. One general writes notes in the margins to another and asks, "What was ever done about this?" The author of the original letter that started this investigation wrote: "On the flight down here a few of our ships had engine trouble. Out of our squadron of 9 ships, 4 got to Gulfport. One ship crashed - the others were forced down. Seems the engines on the ships were bad. Out of our group of 36 planes, there were around 5 ships with all their engines good (ours is one of the five). There's around 80 engines bad in the bunch (all new engines). The ship that was lost had 3 engines blow up all their oil, then "freeze up." So the whole crew bailed out in the Louisiana Swamps. We flew them back to Salina the night before last for a new ship."
