Excellent high-resolution archived copy. Great illustrations and a great reference manual. Many detailed and comprehensive drawings and color reference illustrations. One of the most interesting aspects of this plane was that because it sat so tail low, the instructions for getting into the plane show illustrations about how the crew is supposed to climb up on the tail and walk to the cockpit. See page 99.
Description
The F7U-3 airplane (figures 1-1 and 1-2) is a single-place jet-propelled sweptwing carrier-based fighter. The F7U-3M airplane (figures 1—1 and 1—2) is a single-place jet-propelled sweptwing carrier-based fighter equipped to carry, launch, and guide the Sparrow I missile. The F7U-3P airplane (figures 1—1A and 1—2) is a single-place jet-propelled sweptwing carrier-based photographic reconnaissance airplane. Differences between versions of the airplanes are listed in figure 1—1B. The principal identification characteristics are the absence of a horizontal tail surface and the placement of vertical tail surfaces on the wing. Two J46-WE-8, -8A, or -8B turbojet engines with afterburners power the airplane. The twin vertical surfaces mounted at the wing trailing edges provide directional control of the airplane. Pitch and roll control is obtained through ailavators. The ailavators perform the functions of both ailerons and elevators and are operated by irreversible hydraulic systems which are, in turn, controlled by conventional control stick movements. When an irreversible hydraulic system is used, no aerodynamic force is felt at the control stick. An artificial feel system is used to simulate this force. Controllable full-span slats on the leading edges of the wings are provided to increase the maximum lift coefficient and thereby improve low-speed flight characteristics of the airplane. A flight stabilization system dampens yawing and pitching motions to improve highspeed characteristics of the airplane.
