Description

This early 1970s film begins with flight of new F-14 Tomcats heading towards the carrier for recovery. It is a perfect beginning since this film is all about Naval Carrier Flight Operations, the launching and recovery of aircraft aboard a fast moving carrier and all the things that go on in the background to make it all happen.

The film presents all aspects of carrier operations and manned tactical aircraft from Naval Air Force Atlantic. There are many cat shots showing deck hands at work in launching a wide variety of aircraft

  • F-14 Tomcat
  • F-8 Crusader
  • S-3 Viking
  • SH-3 Sea King
  • A-7 Corsair II
  • E-2 Hawkeye
  • F-4 Phantom II
  • A-6 Intruder

We learn about the eight carriers that are part of NAVAIRLANT group and we also see P-3 aircraft in flight and taking off to help cover the fleet and watch for icebergs. Anti-Submarine Warfare helicopter operations are shown as well. Additional items of interest seen in this film:

  • P-3 Orion
  • RH-53B Sea Stallion
  • Attack Squadron 74
  • Carrier USS NIMITZ
  • CDR Emory Brown
  • Medium Attack Wing One
  • COMNAVAIRLANT facilities and offices are shown.
  • Hangar 122 – Home of the A-6 Intruder
  • VA-42 Intruder Country

We see the USS Independence scheduling board showing its compliment of F4J, A7E, A6E, A6K, E2C, S3A, SH3 and EA6B aircraft schedule for the cruise.

We see the background of carrier and air wing operations is shown, including logistics and transporting needed materials back and forth to the carries using C-1A CODs. We also see an aerial view of NAS Jacksonville and some internal views of the naval aviation maintenance facilities.

VA-174 aircraft are shown along with a close-up shot of F-4J 155834 with tail code AD, being repaired.

Squadron pilot’s are shown going through simulator training with individual and linked, link trainers. We go inside a flight briefing for training missions. "ODO says we got airplanes. Let’s man them up.", the instructor says.

VA-85 A-6 Intruder BUNO 15835 is seen along with Intruders 155615 and 153684.

We see a number of recoveries of aircraft on the NAVAIRLANT carrier. Nice shot of a pilot doing a pre-flight while standing on top of an F-4.
