January 24, 1944


1/24/1944 - Lt. John J. Hockery - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - ME 110 - Aircraft is pursued and fired on. Debris is seen flying off. Planes number one engine begins to smoke. More strikes and smoke now coming from right wing as well. Flying P-47D MX-L 44-19950. Lost in this aircraft November 26, 1944. POW.

1/24/1944 - Lt. Lester Kress - 360th Squadron - 356th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Multiple strikes against FW 190 in aerial combat. Flying P-47D PI-F. Named "Dear Alean" after girlfriend Alean Brisley.

1/24/1944 - Maj. William E. Johnson Jr - 360th Squadron - 356th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Engagement with FW 190. Flying P-47D 42-73639 PI-V. Named Kitten, pet name for wife. KIA in this aircraft April 10, 1944.

1/24/1944 - Lt. Joseph F Furness "Li'l Joe" - 350th Squadron - 353th Fighter Group - ME 110 - ME 110 is pursued and struck in aerial combat. Smoke comes from number two engine. Flying P-47D 42-7907 named Lonesome Polecat.

1/24/1944 - Lt. Dinse - 350th Squadron - 353th Fighter Group - ME 110 - ME 110 is struck with aerial gunfire and smoke begins to trail from aircraft.

January 29, 1944


1/29/1944 - Lt. Evan J MachenLt. Evan J. Machen "Big Brains" - 77th Squadron - 20th Fighter Group - ME 210 - Aerial engagement. Aircraft is struck with gunfire. Reported to be a P-38J 42-68181. San Beradino, Calif. Capt. - 19 March 1944; Assigned: 30 Sept. 1942- 77th; Asst Sqdn. Adjutant 10 Jan. 1943 to 8 April 1944: Flight Commander 17 Feb 1944 to 8 April 1944. Combat Hours: 101:10. Claims: Destroyed: 1 Me110 (air); 1 JU88 (ground); 1 u/i t/e (ground); Damaged 2 u/i t/e (ground). Air Medal and 5 Clusters: D.F.C. Killed in Action 8 April 1944.

1/29/1944 - Lt. Col. Harry J. Dayhuff - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - FW 190 is struck with gunfire. Flying P-47C 41-6618 MX-Z named Hun Ram-Er / Mackie. Mackie was nickname for wife Maxine.

1/29/1944 - Lt. Vernon Y. Jones - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - FW 190s engaged. You can easily tell is an FW 190 when plane rolls on back and gear extends. Flying P-47D 42-7883 MX-X named Iron Ass. KIA in this aircraft February 10, 1944.

1/29/1944 - Lt. William S. Swanson - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - FW 190 is struck at close range with gunfire. Flying P-47D 42-74733 MX-P. Lt. Joseph A. Scheibler was KIA in this aircraft on February 11, 1944.

1/29/1944 - Lt. Manuel S. Martinez - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Pilot appears to be flying bomber escort. FW 190 is engaged and descends. Flying either P-47D 42-7954 MX-L or P-47D 42-8619 MX-M.

January 30, 1944


1/30/1944 - 1st Lt. Quentin L. Quinn - 328th Squadron - 352nd Fighter Group - FW 190 - FW 190 is pursued above clouds. Flying P-47D 42-8517 PE-Q named INB / Eleanor. INB = Indiana National Bank, where he used to work.

1/30/1944 - Lt. Robert J Booth "Posty" - 369th Squadron - 359th Fighter Group - ME 109 - ME 109 is engaged in dogfight. Multiple strikes from gunfire. Passes directly in front of camera at close range. Flying P-47D 42-8695 IV-F named Oily Boid.

January 31, 1944


1/31/1944 - 1st Lt. Duane W. Beeson "Bee" - 334th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - ME 109 - ME 109 is pursued and struck. Flying P-47D 42-7890 named Boise Bee.

1/31/1944 - Lt. Clotfelter - 335th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Aircraft is struck and debris fly's off. Battle continues at close range.

February 3, 1944


2/3/1944 - Lt. William T. Thistlethwaite - 350th Squadron - 353rd Fighter Group - Armed Trawler - Trawler is strafed. Flying P-47D 42-76352 YJ-Q. KIA in this aircraft May 12, 1944.

February 6, 1944


2/6/1944 - Lt. James W. Wilkinson - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - Ground Targets - Airdrome is strafed. Multiple planes are struck. Flying P-47D MX-L named Pin-Up Girl (artwork of nude with hairpins in)

2/6/1944 - Lt. Donald E. Ludwig - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - Ground Targets, ME 109 - Strafing airdrome and chasing ME 109 that comes into frame from above. KIA February 10, 1944 in P-47C 41-6249 Named Vee Gaile.

2/6/1944 - Lt. Marlowe - 84th Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - Ground Targets - Flak tower is strafed. Locomotive is struck. Barges strafed.

2/6/1944 - Lt. Peter E Pompetti - 84th Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - Ground Targets - Aircraft on ground are strafed. Flak tower strafed. Train strafed and boiler blows. Tug strafed with barges. Flying P-47C 41-6393 WZ-R named Darkie and then changed to Axe the Axis.

February 19, 1944


2/19/1944 - Robert S. Johnson - 61st Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - ME 110 - Target aircraft formation is high and above fighter but fighter climbs for attack. Flying either P-47C 41-6235 HV-P named Half Pint, P-47D 42-76234 HV-P named All Hell, P-47D 42-25512 LM-Q named Penrod and Same or P-47D 42-8461 named Lucky.

February 20, 1944


2/20/1944 - Lt. James B. Dickson - 358th Squadron - 355th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Close pursuit with target aircraft and hits from gunfire. Good close shots. KIA April 8, 1944 in P-51B 43-7147 YF-X.

2/20/1944 - Lt. Col. Francis S. Gabreski - 61st Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - ME 110 - Aggressive hit on target aircraft with debris exploding off aircraft. Flying P-47D 42-25864 or 42-26418 HV-A.

2/20/1944 - Lt. Donovan F. Smith "Dieppe, Don" - 61st Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - ME 110 - Target aircraft formation is attacked and one aircraft sustains hit with flames and begins to descend. Flying P-47C 41-6319 HV-M named P.J & Hun Hunter.

2/20/1944 - Lt. Stanley B. Morrill "Fats, Stan" - 62nd - 56th Fighter Group - ME 11 & DO 217 - Ground target attack with explosive strafing. Last plane it struck at a low altitude. Flying P-47C 41-6387 LM-F named on the left side Fats / Btfsplk and on the right side Debt Collector.

2/20/1944 - Lt. Grant M. Turley - 82nd - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Twisting turning dogfight in close quarters. Flying P-47D 42-27339 MX-S or P-47D 42-7998 MX-D and MX-N named Kitty - Sundown Ranch. Named after his home in Snowflake, AZ. KIA March 6, 1944.

2/20/1944 - Maj. George Carpenter "Carp" - 335th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - ME 110 - Excellent close battle with shots striking target aircraft and debris flying off plane. Flying P-47C 41-6226 WD-I.

2/20/1944 - Capt. William T. Halton - 328th Squadron - 352nd Fighter Group - ME 109 - ME 109 is attacked by fighter coming up from below. Struck with smoke billowing. Flying P-47D 42-8439 PE-T named Slender, Tender and Tall with picture of Buggs Bunny on left cowl.

2/20/1944 - Lt. Frank A. Cutler - 486th Squadron - 352nd Fighter Group - ME 109 & ME 110 - Air attack and then ground attack. Several low passes over town along coast. Flying P-47D 42-75399 PZ-P.

2/20/1944 - Capt Lionel F GrahamCapt. Lionel F. Graham "Lindy" - 79th Squadron - 20th Fighter Group - ME 110 - Plane is struck repeatedly. Flying P-38J 42-67497 or 42-67926 MC-L named Susie. Ridgewood, N.J. Capt.-4 Jan. 1944: Assigned: 27 Oct 1942 - 79th. Asst. Sqdn. Ops. Officer 28 Oct. 1942 to 1 Dec. 1942. Flight Commander 22 Sept. to 18 Nov. 1943. Sqdn. Ops. Officer 18 Nov. 1943 to 18 March 1944. Combat Hours: 130:10. Claims: Destroyed: 3 FW190s; 1 1/2 Me110s. Damaged: 1 FW190; 1Me109 (all air). Air Medal. 3 Clusters; DFC. 1 Cluster. February 22, 1944


2/22/1944 - Lt. Col. F.S. Gabreski - 61st Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - FW 190 & DO 217 - Close air combat and second plane is strafed on ground.

2/22/1944 - Lt. James E. Fields - 62nd Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - ME 109 & FW 190 - Target aircraft is struck and then begins to trail smoke. Second plane appear to have belly tank explode. Flying P-47D 42-75213 LM-L. Lost in this aircraft March 27, 1944.

2/22/1944 - Lt. John P. Bryant - 62nd Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - FW 190 & ME 109 - Target aircraft closes in head to head battle. Second target aircraft is struck from behind and explodes. Flying P-47C 41-6234 LM-A named Sugar baby.

2/22/1944 - Lt. Joseph Eagan - 63rd Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - FW 190 & ME 109 - Strong attack on target aircraft. Once struck target aircraft dives while attacker turns attention to other plane. Flying P-47C 41-6230 UN-E named Holy Joe.

2/22/1944 - Col. Henry R. Spicer - 364th Squadron - 357th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Belly tank struck and explodes. Tracers seen streaming past target aircraft. Flying P-51B 43-6880 G4-H named Tony Boy. POW in this aircraft March 5, 1944.

2/22/1944 - 1st Lt. John B. Carder "The Blade" - 364th Squadron - 357th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Hard shot on target aircraft and flames obscure view. Looks like it was previously struck as left landing gear is partially down. Flying P-51B 42-106777 C5-J named Taxpayer's Delight. POW in this aircraft May 12, 1944.

2/22/1944 - Capt. J. Medeiros - 364th Squadron - 357th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Aircraft is struck from behind. Debris fly's off.

2/22/1944 - Lt. Col. Glenn E. Duncan - 351st Squadron - 353rd Fighter Group - Airfield, Trains, FW 190 - Strafing run over town targets airfield with target aircraft being hit. Strafing continues across tarmac to buildings on other side. Several buildings struck. Appears to be one or two people on field. Early morning or evening attack on two moving trains. Amazingly close air attack on FW190. Surprised they did not collide. Flying P-47D LH-X named Dove of Peace.

2/22/1944 - Lt. John G. Treitz - 351st Squadron - 353rd Fighter Group - JU 88 - Slow moving JU 88 near ground appears to be struck and then makes hard low turn appearing to stall and crash. Next shot shows JU 88 strafed on ground. Flying P-47D 42-7987 YJ-J named Jeannie.

2/22/1944 - Lt. Holt - 351st Squadron - 353rd Fighter Group - Airdrome, Trains, EA & FW 190 - Grainy shot over airdrome showing explosion. Strafing run on train and final segment is of target aircraft smoking as it passes below.

2/22/1944 - Maj. Roy B. Caviness - 376th Squadron - 361st Fighter Group - Trains & Radio Tower - Grainy attack on locomotive through trees. Tracers and bullets strike locomotive on low strafing run. Train enters small town during next sequence. Low strafing run on radio tower. Flying P-47D 42-22784 E9-C named Goona.

February 24, 1944


2/24/1944 - Lt. Peal - 83rd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Grainy close traumatic aerial combat.

2/24/1944 - Lt. Wise - 83rd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Dogfight results in target aircraft being struck in smoky impact from behind.

2/24/1944 - Lt. Juchheim - 83rd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - ME 109 - ME 109 is struck and smoke begins to trail from wing. Plane is struck again and debris flies off plane.

2/24/1944 - Lt. G.M. Turley - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - ME 109 - EA is attacked and disappears below screen. Next sequence is of pilot descending under parachute.

2/24/1944 - Maj. J. C. Stewart - 61st Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Belly tank on FW 190 explodes and vanishes after being struck. Target aircraft attempts evasive action. Pilot bails out at end.

2/24/1944 - Lt. J.H. Truluck - 63rd Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Plane is struck and explosion is seen.

2/24/1944 - Lt. Stearns - 350th Squadron - 353rd Fighter Group - FW 190 - Choppy sequence but one segment is of head-to-head attack with FW 190.

2/24/1944 - Lt. Walsh - 350th Squadron - 353rd Fighter Group - FW 190 - Brutal sequence of target aircraft being struck in wing, it breaks away and plane begins to roll over and over.

2/24/1944 - Lt. Stolzy - 374th Squadron - 361st Fighter Group - ME 109 - ME 109 is struck and smokes. Plane on ground and train attacked.

2/24/1944 - 1st Lt. E.L. Heller - 486th Squadron - 352nd Fighter Group - E-Boat - Water vessel is strafed. Tracers are shot toward aircraft.

2/24/1944 - 1st Lt. A.L. Mardhall - 486th Squadron - 352nd Fighter Group - E-Boat - Surface vessel is seen making S curves to evade attack. Strafed from front.

February 25, 1944


2/25/1944 - 1st Lt. D. Woodward - 376th Squadron - 361st Fighter Group - ME 109 - ME 109 under distant attack until end of sequence when it is struck from behind in close attack.

2/25/1944 - Lt. P.E. Pompetti - 84th Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - Ground Targets - Attack on ground targets demonstrates the shake caused by the firing of wing guns. It is apparent when the plane is firing.

March 2, 1944


3/2/1944 - F/O L.M. Dudley - 358th Squadron - 355th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Short segment on aerial engagement of FW 190.

3/2/1944 - Lt. W.V. Gresham - 358th Squadron - 355th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Aerial combat above puffy clouds.

March 4, 1944


3/4/1944 - 1st Lt. W. F. Sooman - 336th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - JU 52 - Slower moving target aircraft is attacked from rear. Many shots hit.

March 5, 1944


3/5/1944 - Lt. J.F. Steele - 335th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - FW 200 - Target aircraft attempts to evade by flying just above treetops. Repeatedly struck.

3/5/1944 - Lt. J.D. Dye - 335th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Another aircraft flies between attacking craft and target aircraft during attack. Target aircraft rolls over and rapidly descends.

March 6, 1944


3/6/1944 - Col. H. Zemke - 63rd Squadron - 56th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Excellent pictures of close aerial combat.

3/6/1944 - 2nd Lt. M.A. Stanley - 364th Squadron - 357th Fighter Group - FW 200 - Two large FW 200's appear in formation. Fighter attacks one as one engine flames up just above treetops.

3/6/1944 - Lt. R.P. Spalding - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Close combat. Debris flies past gun camera.

3/6/1944 - Lt. J.W. Wilkinson - 82nd Squadron - 78th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Very close aerial combat over farms. Looks like planes came very close to striking each other at end of sequence.

3/6/1944 - 1st Lt. A. Rafalovich - 334th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - ME 109 - Belly tank struck by gunfire and explodes.

3/6/1944 - 1st Lt. A.W. Chatterley - 334th Squadron - 4th Fighter Group - FW 190, JU 88 - JU 88 repeatedly struck from low attack. Strafing run on airdrome results in multiple EA being struck. Low strafing run on train.

3/6/1944 - 1st Lt. R.L. Pherson - 369th Squadron - 359th Fighter Group - ME 109 - ME 109 is struck in aerial combat. Appears canopy comes off at end of sequence.

3/6/1944 - 2nd Lt. R.J. Booth - 369th Squadron - 359th Fighter Group - FW 190 - Close combat with excellent shows. Debris flies of target aircraft.

3/6/1944 - Capt. Sedman - 374th Squadron - 361st - FW 190 - Target aircraft is struck and debris slowly separates.

3/6/1944 - Capt. Kotaleski - 354th Squadron - 355th Fighter Group - ME 109 - First target aircraft is struck during low flight and appear to nose over. Second target aircraft is flying so low that it has to climb to clear power lines.
