This one-of-a-kind B-17 book contains a series of rare items you won’t find elsewhere. If you are interested in the B-17 Flying Fortress then the book sections below will be of significant interest.
This B-17 book contains the following sections.
German Fighter Tactics Against B-17 Flying Fortress
This is previously restricted information and describes the different German fighter tactics used to shoot down B-17s.
The tactics are named, diagramed in color, and described in detail. Each tactic is given a name like “Sisters Act”, “Roller Coaster”, “The Pepper Spray” and “The Single Engine Tail Pecker”, etc.
This document comes from Headquarters Eighth Air Force, Office of the Commanding General.
It includes specific information about attacks from Focke-Wolf Fw 190, Junkers Ju 88, Messerschmitt Bf 109/Me 109, and Messerschmitt Bf 110/Me 110.
Boeing B-17G Factory Delivery Document for New Aircraft
This is the prime contractor’s plant manual on the production of an individual B-17. It is just like a sticker on a new car, it details all of the parts on a newly delivered B-17G. Contains a detailed equipment list.
The plane detailed in this manual is serial number 42-31281 and the manual contains documents that ferry pilots would have to sign on delivery of a new factory fresh B-17.
B-17G Winterization Check List
This eighteen-page chapter is a fascinating look behind the scenes and gives you a great reference document about where things came from that fell together to make a Flying Fortress.
B-17E Engine Performance Issues
This fifteen-page chapter contains detailed information regarding engine problems with the B-17E.
The author of the original letter that started this investigation wrote: “On the flight down here a few of our ships had engine trouble. Out of our squadron of 9 ships, 4 got to Gulfport. One ship crashed – the others were forced down. Seems the engines on the ships were bad. Out of our group of 36 planes, there were around 5 ships with all their engines good (ours is one of the five).
There are around 80 engines bad in the bunch (all-new engines).
The ship that was lost had 3 engines blow up all their oil, then “freeze up.” So the whole crew bailed out in the Louisiana Swamps. We flew them back to Salina the night before last for a new ship.”
B-17F Nose Mount Alteration
This five-page chapter has instructions and pictures regarding the B-17F field alterations required. Nice interior shots.
Battle Damaged B-17 Aircraft and War Operation Photos
This collection of 138 photos is of B-17s in operation. Many photos are of crew examining their planes after returning from battle with huge holes blown in the aircraft.
Examples of other photos included: B-17 mechanics working on craft in South Pacific. Actual battle photos from a bombing mission against Villacoublay, France 20 May 1944.
One of my favorite pictures has to be the B-17 drone headed straight at the U.S. Capitol.
Captain Clark Gable at waist gunner’s position. Warning – sexy nose art included.
This collection also includes many photos of nose art and planes that can be identified, including:
