As the Allied armiesadvanced across France and into Germany, several hundred airfields were builtor rehabilitated for use by the allied air forces. For security reasons, theairstrips were referred to by a coded number instead of location. In theUnited Kingdom, USAAF installations were identified by three digit (AAF) num-bers ranging from AAF-101 to AAF-925.* After D-Day, continental airfields inthe European Theater of Operations (ETC) were also assigned coded numbers.American airfields were given A-, Y-, or R-, prefixes and numbered con-secutively from 1 to 99. British airfields on the continent were also con-secutively numbered, but with a B-prefix.The bulk of primary source material dealing with USAAF activities inWestern Europe refers to the various airfields only by code number, therebymaking it difficult or impossible to identify an airfield without a referencekey. This guide is intended to bridge this difficulty.Unlike the permanent airfields built in the United Kingdom and designedfor the strategic bombardment of Germany, airfields on the continent were tem-porary, often improvised airfields to be used by the tactical air forces tosupport the advancing ground armies engaged on the battlefield. To provide*For a comprehensive listing of AAF codes, see Capt Barry J. Anderson'sArmy Air Forces Stations, A Guide to the Stations Where U.S. Army Air ForcesPersonnel Served in the United Kingdom During Wbrld War II, published by theResearch Division, USAF Historical Research Center, Maxwell AFB, Alabama,31 January 1985.RareAviation.comthe maximum close air support for the invasion force, it was desirable for thetactical forces to be based within one hundred miles of the front Lines.1Since the battle lines could change dozens of miles in a single day, therequirement was for a mobile air force that could rapidly construct and occupyairfields and keep pace with the advancing troops. This responsibility was placed in the hands of USAAF's Ninth Air Force andits specially created engineering arm, the IX Engineer Command. Each aviationengineer battalion in the command (of a total of sixteen) was composed of suf-ficient men and equipment to quickly construct an airfield or landing ground*for a single tactical fighter or bomb group unit. Based on the experienceobtained in the North African and Italian campaigns, fighter groups requiredan airfield 120 feet x 3600 feet long, and fighter-bomber groups requiredfields 120 feet x 5000 feet long (Figure 1). Medium bomb groups required 120feet x 6000 feet runways (Figure 2). Instead of using rough, unimproved dirtstrips, engineers used surfacing material necessary to strengthen the soil tosupport the weight of the aircraft and as a measure of insurance against thewet weather.2The surfacing material selected for the building of advanced landinggrounds during the first weeks after the Normandy invasion was known as square-mesh track (SMT). SMT, a British development, was material composed of heavyTechnically, the term "landing ground" signified a landing area withoutan all weather runway and with incomplete facilities. Men facilities werecompleted or an all weather runway was constructed, the landing area was to becalled an "airfield." It was common practice, however, for the generic term"airfield" to be used regardless of the technical status of the landing area.2RareAviation.comFrom RareAviation.comCRASH STRIP 2000 *100 GQAtHD i- COmUm/JID EARTHHwGRADF.D & COMPETEDFl.YINC Cj !* \ZZ SERVICE ROM)7 6 HARDSTANDS I Y PR1 ORlT XPLAN(DETAILS SEtW*/ ASE/flO JCLEARED200 MlM.' It was chosen over other surfacingmaterials because it was very lightweight, allowing sufficient quantities tobe transported across the English channel cn overtasked landing craft.3Easily workable, a SMT landing mat for fighters could be layed like a carpetin about one week.On D-Day, engineer aviation battalions stormed ashore alongside US Armyinfantry battalions and headed toward preselected sites to build airfields. Before the end of the day, an emergency landing strip was completed atPoupeville and by 8 June a transport field was constructed at St Laurent surMer (A-21), thus becoming the first wartime American airfield in the con-tinental ETO. Construction continued at a rapid pace on other fields usingSMT. Several of these fields were initially used by Ninth Air Force groups cna "roulemont" basis. Fighters based in England could be refueled and rearmedat the forward field, conduct their missions and then return to England ifgreater maintenance services were required. In mid-June 1944, in the absence of German fighter opposition, the NinthAir Force decided to use its fighters in a fighter-bomber role, thus requiringall planned fighter fields on the continent be built as 120 feet x 5000 feetfighter-bomber strips. Although this created seme SMT supply difficulties, bythe end of June 1944, eight Ninth Air Force fighter groups were conductingtactical bombing missions from ten operational airfields in the Normandybeachhead. After the initial batch of airfields was completed using SMT, the Armyaviation engineers switched almost exclusively to another surfacing material5RareAviation.comknown as prefabricated hessian (burlap) surfacing (PHS or PBS). Light andeasily transportable, PHS did not create the dust problem encountered with SMTfields. Made of an asphalt-impregnated jute delivered in rolls 300 feet inlength and 36 inches or 43 inches in width, PHS was layed in overlappinglayers to produce a dust-free fair weather surface.6 It was also common tobuild airstrips using both SMT and PHS, laying SMT on top.To provide an all season durable airfield for the Ninth Air Force'smedium and light bombers, a third type of surfacing material known as piercedsteel plank (PSP)*, was introduced cn the Normandy bridgehead in July 1944.It consisted of 10 feet long, 15 inch wide steel planks joined together andlayed perpendicular to the line of flight. Leng used in other theaters, PSPwould have been ideal for all airfields on the continent, but its limitedavailability and greater weight made this impractical. Moreover, because ofsupply problems, construction of even a PSP fighter-bomber field could take amonth or longer, while similar PHS and SMT fields could be constructed in twoweeks and one week, respectively.?By the end of July 1944, all but three of the Ninth Air Force's twentyfighter groups were based cn the SMT and PHS-constructed advanced landinggrounds on the continent. The rapid advance of the Allied armies followingthe breakout through the Normandy hedgerow country produced a new rush ofairfield construction as the tactical air force units sought to keep pace with*Also known as "Marston mat."RareAviation.comFrom RareAviation.comthe advancing armies. This breakthrough period, which lasted from late Julyto mid-S^)tember 1944, was characterized by the "leapfrogging of air forceunits as they alternately occupied and abandoned airfields behind the frontlines. The airfield construction policy following the breakout of the beach-head area called for tactical airfields in "clutches of four or fiveairstrips, enough to provide room for the fighter groups of a tactical aircommand plus an air depot group.During this time of constant movement in late 1944, almost all new air-fields built used PHS material. So swift was the allied offensive, however, that the airfields were almost out of effective range of the front before theywere completed. To help overcome this situation, captured German airfieldswere cleared of mines and craters and repaired. In fact, it was found thatGerman airfields could be rehabilitated and made operational sooner thanairfields built on virgin sites.10Another unforeseen development was the extraordinary demand fortransport, supply, and evacuation fields as the Allied armies pushed pastParis toward the German frontier. In late 1944, supplies could not keep pacewith General Eisenhower's forces, and to help lessen the supply shortage,120 feet x 3,000+ feet airfields for 0-47 planes became a priority (Figure 3).Bringing in ammo and gasoline, the 047's cn the return trip evacuated woundedto the rear.By 15 September 1944, IX Engineer Command had placed over eighty airfields in operation, while British engineers had constructed seventy-six7RareAviation.comfields in their zone.*1 In Southern France, another twenty or so fields hadbeen built by American engineers from the Mediterranean Theater of Operations(MTO). In October these uncoded MTO airfields were assigned to the ETO andgiven code nunbers. The stabilization of the front lines in Holland, Belgium, and easternFrance in mid-September 1944, which would last into the new year, allowedaviation engineers a chance to reorganize and prepare for the upcoming winterseasen. As expected, they could not build new PHS and SMT strips during thefall rain and winter snow seasons because of the moist ground. Besidesconcrete, the American-made PSP was the only available surfacing material thatcould be laid down during this inclement weather in Europe. Selected air-fields in Belgium and France were therefore "winterized" with PSP. Because ofthe limited supply of PSP, however, only a limited number of airfields couldbe winterized, making it necessary to base two group sized units perairfield.*2 gut sufficient fighter-bomber and medium bomber airfields werecompleted that winter to ensure Ninth Air Force aircraft could continue flyingcombat missions. The major problem affecting airfield construction in early 1945 was notthe surprise German Ardennes counteroffensive (which caused the abandonment ononly one airfield - Y-39, Hagenau). Bather, an early February thaw threatenedto make airfields inoperable due to the mud and water. Using local civilianlabor, engineers performed extensive maintenance on the threatened airfieldsand successfully resolved the crisis.*3The renewed allied offensive in early 1945, following the Battle of the9RareAviation.comBulge, was supported in earnest by the building of tactical airfields inoccupied Germany. Trier (Y-57), became the first operational tacticalAmerican airfield on German soil on 10 March 1945. When a crossing over theRhine River was spearheaded at Remagen, Germany, a supply and evacuation stripwas quickly set to support the bridgehead. As Allied tank col unns struckout rapidly into the heartland of Germany, the airfield "dutches" of theNinth Air Force's tactical air commands moved east of the Rhine river withinrange of virtually any target in Germany.14 Scores of Luftwaffe sod and hardsurfaced airfields were captured in the lightning advance, virtually un-damaged, lessening the requirement for SMT, PHS, and PSP prefabricated sur-facing. The relative lack of German military opposition in late March, Apriland May of 1945 lessened the need for close air support aid produced a greaterdemand for supply strips to keep the offensive moving.1^ Every oxportunitywas used to clear captured German airfields for use along the armies' route, allowing C-47s and other transports to land with food, gas, and ammunition. The sipply effort received top airfield priority. By V-E Day, 9 May 1945, 76of the 126 airfields made operational east of the Rhine river were strictlysupply and evacuation fields.American engineers constructed or rehabilitated over 280 continental air-fields in the ETO from D-Day to V-E Day (Figure 4, located at end of guide). In the summer months that followed, a few new airfields were constructed, butdozens more were abandoned. The airfield coding system remained in effectuntil after the Japanese surrender in the Pacific, when, on 14 September 1945,the system was officially discontinued. Thereafter, airfields were referencedby their geographic name.1?10RareAviation.comFrom RareAviation.comREFERENCES1. Part I, the numerical listing, includes all USAAF continental airfield codes. Part II, the alphabeticallisting, indoles official and alternative names of the airfields. Part IIIis a listing of British (B-) continental airfields as of 1 July 1945.Explanation of terms:Cede No. The Army Air Forces code nuntoer assigned. Alternative codesappear in parenthesis.NOTE: Sone A-ccded airfields initially carried C, N, or D suffixes todistinguish airfields with courier, night landing or air depotfacilities respectively. (Example: A-21C, A-8N, A-9D). Addition-ally, Y-coded airfields were originally designated AY-coded air-fields. These variations are not represented in the listings.Airfield Name/Location. The official name of the airfield with thecountry of origin.AirfieldInitial Op Date. The date the airstrip was declared operational forallied military use.Date of Release. The date the airstrip was abandoned or releasedfrom USAAF control.Combat Units Stationed/Date. USAAF combat units assigned to the airfieldbetween 6 June 1944 to 9 May 1945. The primary units listed are combatgroups. Squadrons are listed only when the squadron is assigned to anairfield different from its parent group. Units above the group levelare not listed. If no major combat unit occupied the field, the type offield is given. Various French Air Force (FAF) and Royal Air Force (RAF)units that were assigned to these airfields are not listed. The dates given were obtained from the official lineage and honorshistories in frtaurer Maurer's Air Force Combat Units of World War II andCombat Squadrons of the Air Force, World War II. Discrepancies wereresolved by a check of the actual unit histories on file at the USAFHistorical Research Center.NOTE: Fighter, bomber, troop-carrier and reconnaissance groups andsquadrons were stationed exclusively at letter coded airfields.Because liaison squadrons could operate out of short fields andon unprepared surfaces, they were not always stationed at a lettercoded airfield.
